Rocco Laurie students
to donate concert proceeds to families of two slain NYPD officers
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- These kids have talent -- and heart.

When performing arts students at Police Officer Rocco Laurie Intermediate School stage their annual winter concert at the end of the month they'll be performing for a cause.
Tickets to the event -- which is scheduled for January 28 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Springville school -- are $5 each -- and the kids have decided to donate the proceeds from ticket sales to the families of fallen NYPD Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
Ramos and Liu were shot "execution-style" while sitting inside their patrol car on Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn last month.
Officer Ramos had been an NYPD school safety agent at the intermediate school, which is named after another officer who was tragically gunned down while on duty in 1972.
The idea to donate the proceeds to the officers' families was completely student-driven, school officials said.
"Since Officer Ramos protected our school during his days as a school safety agent, we felt a deep connection to the recent loss and felt that we needed to do something," said band director Adam Jacobs.
"The students came up with this idea and we couldn't be happier to do our part in helping in a small way," he said.
"It is looking to be a great night filled with music where we can honor the lives of Officers Ramos and Liu while showcasing the great talent that we have at Rocco Laurie."
Tickets will be available at the door. For more information, contact the school at 718-698-5757 weekdays before 2 p.m.
The school is located at 33 Ferndale Ave., off Travis Avenue.
I.S.72, which was renamed the Police Officer Rocco Laurie Intermediate School in 2009 after Officer Laurie, was where slain Officer Rafael Ramos worked as a school safety officer before joining the NYPD.
